NASA REQUIREMENTS
NASA REQUIREMENTS
The U.S. homegrown student pipeline is shrinking while the industry demand for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) skills is steadily increasing. In addition, minority representation in the STEM disciplines is only one-third of the representation in the U.S. population at large.
To address these issues, NASA is implementing an integrated Agency-wide approach to human capital management. This approach will attract and maintain a workforce that is representative of the Nation's diversity and includes the competencies that NASA needs to deliver sustained levels of high performance that the Agency's challenging mission requires. This five-year plan, which is a coordinated effort among the Office of Education, the Office of Human Resources, and the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs, is designed to attract and retain students who possess the following "at-risk" competencies:
Systems Engineering
Test Engineering
Mission Assurance
Human Factors
Nuclear Engineering
Integration Engineering
Design & Development Engineering
Quality Engineering & Assurance
Business Management
Mission Execution
The corporate recruitment initiative will link to NASA's many student research and grant programs and leverage NASA's networks with minority, women, and individuals with disabilities to increase workforce diversity.
The Corporate Recruitment Initiative Objectives are as follows:
To strengthen NASA's college recruitment program
To increase awareness of and interest in NASA education and employment opportunities
To create recruitment linkages between NASA's university research and education programs and NASA's employment practices
To build a database of students, in targeted competency areas, that Centers can use as a candidate source for entry-level vacancies
To use workforce analysis as a foundation for NASA-wide recruitment
To provide managers useful tools by marketing current flexibilities and pursuing new flexibilities through legislation or seeking relief from regulatory barriers
To partner with minority, women, and individuals with disabilities' professional, scientific research and education organizations to enhance interest and participation in NASA career opportunities
To develop effective retention strategies including strengthening orientation and mentoring programs
